Isha Sesay
Seasoned and multi-award-winning journalist Isha Sesay has covered global events and major breaking news for nearly two decades, with a special interest in stories of social injustice and their impact on women and girls.
In 2021, Sesay was announced as the new CEO of Okayplayer and Okayafrica — digital platforms committed to elevating Black culture and amplifying Black voices. She also leads their newly created production arm, SPKN/WRD, which is bringing fresh perspectives to the forefront across films, documentaries, television, podcasting and publishing.
Sesay worked as a journalist in the UK for the BBC, Sky and ITN before joining CNN International, where she quickly became a viewer favourite. Her impressive roster of interviews spans Nobel Prize laureates, global political leaders from across Europe and Africa, and a host of newsmakers including Michelle Obama, Bill and Melinda Gates, David Beckham, Nancy Pelosi, Bono, Alicia Keys, Hugh Jackman and Matt Damon.
Reporting from Nigeria in 2014, Sesay led the CNN team that covered the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls in north-eastern Nigeria. The network's in-depth reporting was recognised with a Peabody Award.
Her first book, Beneath the Tamarind Tree: A Story of Courage, Family, and the Lost Schoolgirls of Boko Haram (Dey Street Books), is the first definitive account of the Nigerian schoolgirls' kidnapping. It was published to rave reviews in July 2019 and released in paperback in April 2020.
